North of Monadnock, by Newton F. Tolman
A collection of twenty-five short pieces mostly from the 1950's, true stories of the author's life in the backwoods of southwestern New Hampshire. Many of these were printed in Atlantic Monthly way back. Tolman was a great stylist, a writers' writer, whose work calls to mind Mark Twain and Thoreau. These tales are full of great humor and sharp perception and insight; I mean laugh-out-loud funny, and really capture life in that time and place (1930's-1950's). I highly recommend this book to anybody, particularly anyone from New Hampshire or the area around.
